Transforming Electric Vehicle Charging: The Dynacov Project

The Dynacov Project

The Dynacov (“Dynamic Charging of Vehicles”) project, led by Coventry University, is at the forefront of innovation in electric vehicle (EV) charging technology. By harnessing the power of inductive charging, this project aims to transform the way EVs are charged while driving. The initiative is a collaboration between Coventry University, local authorities, and industry stakeholders, supported by funding from National Grid Electricity Distribution.

Background

The idea of dynamic wireless charging for EVs involves putting metal coils beneath the road surface that can charge EVs as they pass over them. This technology, developed by specialist business Electreon, has previously been tested and verified in a number of nations, including the United States, China, Norway, Germany, Sweden, and France. Coventry University is now at the forefront of implementing this technology in the UK, with a concentration on a portion of Kenilworth Road near the A45.

Objectives of the Dynacov Project

The primary objective of the Dynacov project is to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of dynamic wireless charging for EVs in a real-world setting. Specifically, the project aims to:

  1. Assess the technical feasibility of inductive charging technology on Kenilworth Road.
  2. Evaluate the impact of dynamic wireless charging on EV performance and battery life.
  3. Study the economic and environmental implications of widespread adoption of dynamic wireless charging.
  4. Demonstrate the potential of dynamic wireless charging for buses and logistics vehicles.

Dynacov Project Implementation

Coventry University, in partnership with Electreon and other partners, will manage the installation of metal coils beneath Kenilworth Road. This test stretch will serve as a practical demonstration of dynamic wireless charging technology. The research will also include monitoring and data collection to assess the technology’s efficacy and influence on EVs.

Benefits of Dynamic Wireless Charging

Dynamic wireless charging has the potential to revolutionise the EV industry in several ways:

  • EV drivers will no longer need to worry about finding charging stations, as the road itself becomes the charger.
  • By charging while driving, EVs can reduce downtime and increase overall efficiency.
  • Dynamic wireless charging can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by facilitating the transition to electric vehicles.
  • In the long run, the cost of installing and maintaining dynamic wireless charging infrastructure is expected to be lower than traditional charging stations.

Collaboration for a Sustainable Future

The Dynacov project demonstrates the capacity of collaboration among universities, local governments, and industry partners to generate innovation and meet sustainability objectives. By working together, these stakeholders are paving the road for a greener, more sustainable future.

The Dynacov project is a significant advancement in the development of dynamic wireless charging technology for electric vehicles. By showing the feasibility and benefits of this technology, Coventry University and its partners are paving the road for a more sustainable and efficient transport system. As the research moves further, it is intended to open the path for wider adoption of dynamic wireless charging, making electric vehicles more accessible and environmentally benign than ever.
